2010 Audi R8 Spyder Breaks Cover

Audi currently sells two versions of its R8 supercar, the original 4.2-liter V-8 model and the recently revealed 5.2-liter V-10 version, but there are two more versions in the works, one of which has been revealed today ahead of its world debut at next week’s 2009 Frankfurt auto show. The two new versions are the R8 Spyder convertible, seen here in these leaked official shots, as well as the high-performance RS variant. A spokesman for Audi previously confirmed that the R8 Spyder was delayed to allow time for sales of the V-10 hard-top to eventually die down. The Audi rep also confirmed that the Spyder would feature a full convertible soft-top roof instead of a smaller targa set-up, which was the preferred choice of engineers back in Germany. Other major changes for the car that appear to have made it to production are a pair of additional air intakes located behind the seats, as well as a pair of safety roll-over bars. Sadly, the R8’s trademark aluminum side blades have been removed.

2010 Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita

Image
Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg's parent company is currently tangled up in the purchase of Saab, but that's not stopping the masters that build the CCX from advancing their craft, as proved by the CCXR Trevita revealed today. The car is named from a Swedish contraction meaning "three whites," which signifies the unique silvered carbon fiber bodywork of the Trevita. The company's Diamond Weave exposed carbon fiber bodywork is the epitome of high-tech's marriage of form and function.   Only three of the cars will be built. The core CCXR feature set is the basis, and each gets a double carbon fiber wing, paddle-shift transmission, Inconell exhaust system, carbon ceramic brakes, a hydraulic lift system for getting around town a bit more easily, and a range of creature comforts including a custom navigation and entertainment system. Pricing for the Trevita hasn't been revealed, but expect it to be suitably super. As with most of the hot bits of automotive ma

Volvo 2010

Image
Ford's sale of Volvo may soon go to China's Geely after months of disinterest from potential buyers, though there have been reports that Swedish companies including Volvo's trucks division don't want to see that happen. The uncertainty surrounding the sale may be what's moving Volvo to hold off on its unveiling of the 2010 S60 sedan at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. On the other hand, the market for luxury cars is still anything but certain as well, and Volvo may simply be saving the car for a time when its release would have a more direct impact on sales. Though design work on the production S60 is thought to be complete, there is still some engineering work to be done on the platform's underpinnings, along with mention of a possible V60 wagon variant. The remaining work may be in part related to Volvo leaving the Ford fold and other parts supplier channels opening up. Whatever the cause for the delay, the eventual unveiling of the S60 is equally unknown - no f

Acura ZDX

Acura and its parent company Honda may not be concerned with adding RWD or V8 engines to its lineup, but it is adding another new vehicle to its small lineup, bringing the total to six models. Today Acura has announced that the latest, the four-door coupe 2010 Acura ZDX, will hit the sales floor this winter packed with a bevy of luxury features new. Unveiled at this year's New York Auto Show, the ZDX joins a growing list of in-between sedan/hatch/coupe profile vehicles like the BMW 5-series Gran Turismo and the Toyota Venza. And it certainly is unique in the limited Acura lineup, which otherwise consists of the TSX, RL and TL sedans, and the RDX and MDX SUVs. Core features of the production ZDX include a 3.7-liter 300 horsepower SOHC V-6 engine, a 6-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission and Acura's SH-AWD system. Standard wheels are 19-inch, 7-spoke alloys, the largest standard wheel of any Acura. Inside, the ZDX gets a number of premium treatments, including hand-stitche

GM Announces 230 MPG Rating for Chevrolet Volt

Image
General Motors announced on Tuesday that initial EPA testing of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt has indicated that the car may be able to achieve up to 230 mpg. That's more than four times that of the 2010 Toyota Prius. The 230-mpg Volt would be the first mass-produced production car to crack the 100 mpg barrier. GM says the Volt will be able to travel up to 40 miles on electric power on a single battery charge, and that the gasoline-powered engine that acts as a generator will allow the car to travel up to 300 miles on a tank of gas. The company claims its research shows that most Americans drive less than 40 miles a day, so in theory, the average Volt owner might be able to go for quite some time on electric power alone, assuming the charge is plugged in and charged each night. Indeed, Chevy says that nightly charging is the key to such extraordinarily high mileage. It also needs to be noted that the EPA is developing new testing methodology for plug-in vehicles, and the Volt was measure
